Traveling with your pets? Here are a few things you should know.
Traveling with your pet(s) can be a fun and exciting experience. However, knowing what will be needed for travel can be a convoluted and time-intensive process, even for our veterinarians. Planning in advance and knowing exactly what will be required for your pet(s) to make the trip can reduce the stress for all involved. There maybe many requirements needed in advance and they can vary from state to state or internationally.
General Travel Tips:
- Visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) website, and research the requirements and regulations for the location(s) you will be traveling to and through.
- Work with your veterinarian to create a timeline for necessary vaccinations, completion of health certifications, and other area-specific requirements, such as rabies titer testing.
- Research the departure and arrival destination requirements regarding pet identification tags or registration, kennel markings, and ISO-compatible microchip information.
- If your pet has a history of anxiety, distress, or nausea when traveling, consult your veterinarian for recommendations to prepare your pet for the trip.
Traveling with your pet(s) by car
- Always carry a current health certificate that will be required to cross state lines.
- Always carry current photos of your pet to help identify them is they should become separated during travel or at your final destination.
- Pack a travel bag for your pet, include items such as a leash, bowls, food, bottled water, favorite toys and snacks, any medication they may be taking. Don't forget items to keep them tidy and clean like waste disposal bags, litter and litter boxes, pet friendly cleaning wipes to name a few.
- Don't forget to take breaks to allow your pet the opportunity to walk about and relax. Offer them a bit of food and water if they interested. If your pet gets nauseated from the car ride, only offer small amounts of water.
Flying with your pet(s)
- Many airlines may have different travel requirements than your destination. Always check with your airline for specific requirements for your flight (e.g. pre-flight arrival times, travel carrier specifications, etc.).Each airline may vary, but general specifications can be found on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) website.
- To minimize stress on your pet, it is recommended to book a non-stop flight when possible.
- There are age restrictions for pets when traveling by plane, usually they must be 8-10 weeks but may be required to be at least 15 weeks when traveling internationally. Confirm with your chosen carrier before scheduling your trip.
- Pack a travel bag for your pet, include copies of your pets health record, a leash, food, medication, and favorite toys in case your luggage is lost or delayed. Collapsible bowls are also great to have on hand as well.
